City Departments

The City of Fairmont Administration team consists of 20 full-time employees responsible for overseeing general government function, municipal finances, public information/information services and public utilities.

The Fairmont Municipal Airport (FRM) is a general aviation facility located at 2160 E Blue Earth Avenue. Features a 5,500 ft runway at 1,162 ft elevation with VOR navigational aids.

Building and Zoning administers permits, inspections, zoning code enforcement, and comprehensive planning for Fairmont.

The Building Safety Department oversees all residential and commercial construction in the City of Fairmont, including new construction and remodeling. Staff review building plans for code compliance, issue permits and perform required inspections.

The City Clerk's office manages official City records, elections, public notices, City Council meeting minutes, and licensing.

The Fairmont Economic Development Authority supports business attraction, retention and expansion, manages available industrial properties, and coordinates community development initiatives.

The Engineering Department is responsible for general engineering requirements of the city, implementing plans and programs relating to city infrastructure including storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, structures, roadways, sidewalks, and bike trails.

The Finance Department is responsible for the administration, direction and coordination of all financial services of the City involving financial planning, budgeting, treasury management, investments, purchasing, accounting, payroll, insurance and utility customer services.

The Fairmont Fire Department was founded in 1800 and formally incorporated in 1896. A volunteer/paid on-call department located at the junction of I-90 and U.S. Highway 15, protecting and serving a 110-square-mile area.

The Park Department is responsible for snow removal, general maintenance of municipal facilities and buildings, park and trail maintenance and equipment services. Fairmont is home to miles of scenic recreation trails, paved trails, off-road trails, and parks.

The Planning & Zoning Department is responsible for long-range planning, administration and enforcement of the City's zoning and subdivision regulations, staffing the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, and assisting the community with their projects.

The Fairmont Public Utilities is a municipal utility established in 1902, serving 11,000 residential and commercial customers. Services include electric, water, wastewater, and refuse collection.

The Public Works Department works to maintain and enhance the quality of life for residents through efficient and effective delivery of residential services including parks, streets, engineering, and stormwater management.
